Hamas recommits to hostage swap timeline after Trump threatens to ‘let hell break out’

Hamas said it would continue releasing hostages as part of the ceasefire deal with Israel after a temporary dispute over the terms of the fighting pause.

The terrorist group halted the release of hostages, accusing Israel of violating the terms of the ceasefire with its military actions. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu set a weekend deadline for Hamas to continue releasing hostages, and Hamas now says it will continue to release them.

“Hamas confirms its continued position to implement the deal according to what was signed, which includes exchanging prisoners according to the specified timetable,” Hamas said in a statement, according to CNN.

The outlet also reported that Hamas said the “talks were characterized by a positive spirit” and that mediators from Egypt and Qatar were working to “remove obstacles and fill gaps.” The group said mediators were working on their demands of Israel to allow more aid, supplies, and medical equipment into Gaza.

The continued ceasefire comes after Trump said earlier this week that Israel should “let hell break out” if all the hostages who were taken by Hamas during the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attacks are not released.

“As far as I’m concerned, if all of the hostages aren’t returned by Saturday at 12 o’clock, I think it’s an appropriate time, I would say, cancel it, and all bets are off and let hell break out,” Trump said Monday. “And if they’re not returned — all of them, not in drips and drabs, not two and one and three and four and two — by Saturday at 12 o’clock. And after that, I would say, all hell is going to break out.”

Hamas has released 16 of the 33 hostages it has agreed to free under the terms of this ceasefire, while Israel has released 656 Palestinian prisoners from the nearly 2,000 it has said it would release.

This phase of the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel is set to expire at the end of the month, but negotiations on subsequent phases of the ceasefire have yet to have any significant progress.
