Trump’s second term lacks ‘hysteria’ that Democrats used in 2017: Byron York – Washington Examiner

Byron York, writng for the Washington Examiner, observes that the Democratic party currently lacks the ⁣intense “hysteria” it exhibited⁤ toward Donald Trump during ‌his first term, which York attributes to the party’s struggle to formulate a counter-agenda.⁢ He references comments from Rep. jamie Raskin regarding the potential ‍for⁣ renewed impeachment efforts, suggesting that such actions would only find ⁢traction if Democrats regained control ⁣of the House. York contrasts⁤ the current political climate with the early ‍days of Trump’s presidency in 2017, when intense scrutiny and accusations, particularly⁢ relating to Russian ⁢interference, dominated the narrative. he notes that while Democrats previously maintained a high level of agitation against Trump,‍ they have not⁣ been able to‌ capitalize on current issues‌ in a similar fashion.

Additionally, York highlights the popularity of Trump’s agenda among voters, particularly focusing on Gen Z, as well as recent polling ⁣data showing support for several of his executive actions. Supporters ⁣argue that Trump’s‍ public appearances at major⁣ events help reinvigorate national sentiment and counteract past institutional negativity towards the United States. York‍ suggests that‌ the Democratic opposition is currently weak, allowing⁤ Trump to maintain momentum in his agenda.

Trump’s second term lacks ‘hysteria’ that Democrats used in 2017: Byron York

The Democratic Party is experiencing the absence of the “hysteria” that lawmakers used to target President Donald Trump in his first term, which the Washington Examiner‘s Byron York argued is partially due to the party “flailing” to find its own agenda to counter Trump’s.

A month into Trump’s second term, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) hinted at possibly pursuing another impeachment attempt against the president, citing how the Trump administration’s attempt to sign off on dismissing New York City Mayor Eric Adams‘s bribery case could be impeachable “in a different political environment.” In assessing this claim, York argued that this different political environment Raskin described would be Democrats controlling the House, which is “not going to happen real soon.”

MAKING SENSE OF THE ERIC ADAMS FLAP

“I think there’s something we need to talk about here, which is there’s a couple of aspects to this: one, there’s the popularity of Trump’s positive agenda, and Democrats are kind of flailing about for their own agenda,” York said on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle, guest-hosted by Charlie Hurt. “So that leaves them with the option of attacking Trump, and the problem here is the Democratic, and their media affiliates attack machine has not been able to get in gear. Go back eight years from right now, the first month of Trump’s presidency, February 2017, the national security advisor Michael Flynn has to quit because he’s been targeted by the FBI in some sort of Russia investigation. And if you go back and look at media reports at the time, and what Democrats, including Jamie Raskin, are saying at the time, it really is all Russia, Russia, Russia.”

York further explained that Democrats were able to maintain “a certain hysteria” against Trump throughout his first term but that this hysteria was already lacking so early on in Trump’s return to the White House.

Raskin was likely hoping that the Trump administration’s recent move to dismiss Adams’s case would be something Democrats could latch on to, York explained. This is similar to how other Democratic lawmakers have attempted to target the Department of Government Efficiency and its head, Elon Musk. However, none of the party’s attempts to target Trump have landed in the same way their claims of Russian collusion did several years back.

One factor that is helping Trump’s agenda, the Steamboat Institute‘s Kaylee McGhee White argued, is how the opposition to the president is “so weak” and providing Gen Z voters with “nothing.” Meanwhile, Trump has been delivering on what this voting demographic wanted from the 2024 election, which is “gutting the unelected, unaccountable bureaucracy,” referring to DOGE’s work to downsize the government.

White also cited how Trump’s recent visits to sporting events such as Super Bowl LIX and the 2025 Daytona 500 NASCAR race are “reigniting the American spirit” for voters. This return to the American spirit is an antidote to how many people grew up in institutions that “relentlessly” pressured people to hate the United States.

Recent polling data from Marquette University found that most respondents are in favor of several executive orders issued by Trump, including 63% in favor of the government recognizing only two genders, male and female. Sixty percent of respondents were also in support of both the deportation of illegal immigrants and the expansion of oil and gas production.
