Takeaways from Trump and Musk interview
President Donald Trump and Elon Musk sat down for an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News Tuesday.
In addition to the usual talk on the Department of Government Efficiency and Trump’s executive orders, the two showed mutual admiration for one another, praising the other’s actions.
“I feel like I’m interviewing two brothers here,” Hannity said during the segment.
1. There is no bad blood between Trump and Musk
The interview could have gotten off to a rocky start when Hannity mentioned the $10 million settlement between Trump and X.
“I sued from long before he had it,” Trump clarified. “And I sued, and they had to pay. You know, they paid a $10 million settlement.”
Musk did not seem to be upset by the question, either.
“I left it up to the lawyers and, you know, the team running Twitter,” Musk said. “I said, ‘You guys do what you think makes sense.’”
Trump joked about giving Musk a good rate on the settlement.
“He got a big discount. I don’t think he even knows about it,” Trump said.
Trump and Musk heaped praise on each other throughout the interview, with Trump pointing out how Musk’s Starlink helped victims of Hurricane Helene communicate in North Carolina and Musk admiring Trump’s resiliency in the face of endless attacks.
The interview also eliminated the narrative to portray jealousy between Trump and Musk through rhetoric, including by referring to Elon Musk as “President Musk.”
2. Musk’s role in ensuring the enactment of Trump’s executive orders and DOGE’s battle with bureaucracy
During the interview, Trump said Musk pushed agencies to enforce his executive orders.
“[Musk] said, ‘You know, when you sign these executive orders, a lot of them don’t get done,’” Trump said. “He would take that executive order that I’d signed, and he would have those people go to whatever agency it was, ‘When are you doing it? Get it done. Get it done.’ And some guy that maybe didn’t want to do it, all of a sudden, he’s signing.”
Musk revealed that a large part of DOGE’s mission is to ensure the enforcement of presidential executive orders.
Musk’s role, however, extends beyond that. He said he seeks to reduce the power of the bureaucracy that is undermining the will of the people.
“The president is the elected representative of the people, so he’s representing the will of the people,” Musk said. “If the bureaucracy is fighting the will of the people and preventing the president from implementing what the people want, then what we live in is a bureaucracy and not a democracy.”
In addition, Musk has served in an advisory role for some of Trump’s Cabinet picks.
Trump implied that Musk suggested the nomination of Kristi Noem for secretary of homeland security.
Musk, through his role as an adviser, may be a big reason why Trump is more effective in enacting policies than when he was in his first term.
3. Musk wants to cut $1 trillion in wasteful spending
DOGE has reportedly cut over $50 billion in unnecessary spending. Musk, however, is shooting for more.
“The overall goal is to try to get a trillion dollars out of the deficit,” Musk said. “If the deficit is not brought under control, America will go bankrupt. This is a very important thing for people to understand. A country is no different from an individual, in that if an individual overspends, an individual can go bankrupt, and so can a country.”
Trump said he believes that Musk can accomplish his task.
“As good as [DOGE] are, they’re not going to find some contract that was crooked as hell,” Trump said. “There’s going to be so much that isn’t found. But what is found — I think he’s going to find a trillion dollars.”
A trillion dollars is a far cry from $50 billion, but with more audits, such as a possible audit of the Pentagon, Musk can come close to achieving his goal.
