Rep. Cory Mills under investigation by DC police for alleged assault

Rep. Cory Mills under investigation by DC police for an alleged domestic assault

Washington, D.C. police are investigating Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) for an alleged assault that took place at a residence near the waterfront on Wednesday, and internal affairs are also reviewing the handling of the investigation.

Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a call in the 1300 block of Maryland Ave SW around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday for a report of an assault, the police department said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. The location sits at the Wharf and is approximately 2 miles from the U.S. Capitol.

Though Mills, 44, is not named in the report, MPD spokesman Tom Lynch confirmed to the Washington Examiner that the Florida congressman is the alleged perpetrator and subject of the investigation. An arrest was not made.

NBC 4 Washington News reported that there were multiple copies of the police report showing various levels of details regarding the alleged incident, which has triggered an internal affairs investigation.

The first report detailed the allegations of a woman, a 27-year-old who is not the congressman’s wife, saying her significant other for over a year “grabbed her, shoved her, and pushed her out of the door.” The report goes on to say she showed the officer “bruises on her arm which appeared fresh.”

According to the report, the responding police officer told Mills he would be placed under arrest. But the woman approached police and recanted the details, including where the bruises came from.

Mills is denying any wrongdoing.

“This week, law enforcement was asked to resolve a private matter at Congressman Mills’ residence,” his spokesperson said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “Congressman Mills vehemently denies any wrongdoing whatsoever, and is confident any investigation will clear this matter quickly.”

The woman who made the report denied a physical alternation in a statement to the Washington Examiner on Friday.

“Wednesday, I reached out to law enforcement to address a personal matter,” Sarah Raviani, the co-founder of Iranians for Trump, told the paper. “Several factors influenced my decision to involve the authorities. I had just returned from a 14-hour flight, severely jet-lagged and sleep-deprived. Additionally, I had been drinking during my vacation and had a drink in front of me when the officers arrived, which contributed to my emotional state.”

She added: “Upon their arrival, they noticed some bruising and marks on my arms, which I explained were the result of medical conditions like eczema and activities from my recent trip to Dubai. While the personal matter in question was emotionally charged, there was no physical altercation.”

NBC 4 Washington News reported that it obtained a second police report on Thursday, with a watered-down description stating that MPD officers responded to a family disturbance and there was no probable cause for an arrest.

The report obtained by the Washington Examiner said, “MPD officers responded for a report of an assault. The assault is being investigated by 1st District Detectives Office.” NBC 4 Washington reported that this is the third version of the investigation report.

In a statement, Lynch said there is no more information to provide at this time, but “once MPD leadership became aware of this matter there was an immediate review of our initial response to ensure all procedures were followed.”

“MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is currently investigating this matter,” Lynch said.

The Washington Examiner reached out to MPD for comment on the multiple reports.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said during a press conference on Friday she can’t speak to multiple reports but confirmed that there is an internal investigation “on making sure all of our members did what they were supposed to do according to MPD policy.”

FOUR BIG DEADLINES IN 2025 THAT WILL TEST GOP TRIFECTA LEADERSHIP

Mills has served as the state’s 7th District representative since winning in the 2022 midterm elections. A U.S. Army veteran, he is a strong supporter of President Donald Trump and has said he intends to run for the Senate seat previously held by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
