Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has launched the “Virginia has Jobs” initiative to support federal workers in the state who are facing job losses due to cuts in the federal workforce. With approximately 145,000 federal employees in Virginia, over 10,000 have already lost their positions. Youngkin is advocating for this initiative amid efforts by the Department of Government Efficiency to reduce the workforce, which he defends as necessary to eliminate government “bloat.”
At a recent event in McLean,Youngkin highlighted that there are over 250,000 job openings available in Virginia,which can be explored through a newly launched website and a resource page specifically for unemployed federal workers. He expressed sympathy for those affected by the layoffs, assuring that the state is committed to supporting them in finding new employment opportunities. Furthermore, he emphasized Virginia’s status as a leading state for business, encouraging both individuals and businesses to take advantage of the thriving job market. Youngkin’s initiative follows criticism from Democratic lawmakers regarding the lack of resources for impacted federal employees, particularly in Northern Virginia, which is close to Washington, D.C.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) launched the commonwealth‘s “Virginia Has Jobs” initiative on Monday as scores of federal workers have lost or face losing their positions due to cuts in the federal workforce.
Roughly 145,000, or 6.3% of all federal workers, reside in Virginia, as the Department of Government Efficiency aims to shrink the federal workforce. Already, more than 10,000 federal employees have lost their jobs.
Youngkin previously vowed to support federal workers who lost their jobs while also defending the cuts as necessary to reduce government “bloat.”
At an event on Monday in McLean, Youngkin touted the more than 250,000 open jobs in the Old Dominion that are accessible through a new website, along with a resource page for federal workers who lost their jobs.
“Today, Virginia stands as the top state for business, with tremendous job opportunities across the Commonwealth. ‘Virginia Has Jobs’ is an opportunity for every Virginian — and every business — to capitalize on the thriving economy, with more than 250,000 open jobs waiting to be filled,” Youngkin said in a statement.
He also sympathized with affected federal workers and said that the commonwealth is there to support them through any job loss or change.
“I want to reiterate that if you are in our federal workforce. We care about you. We want to support you. We want to make sure that if you experience any job interruption or changes that you know where to go to get support infrastructure to find that next great opportunity with one of these fabulous employers,” Youngkin said at the event.

Youngkin’s response comes after Democrats in the commonwealth took aim at the lack of resources given to federal workers affected by DOGE cuts.
The DOGE efforts have largely affected jobs in the northern part of Virginia, which borders Washington, D.C. Youngkin promoted the fact that several of the job openings available in the commonwealth are in that region.
