China publicly boosts relationship with Russia as DC and Moscow start talks

Chinese President Xi Jinping told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that their two nations “cannot be moved away” from each other as the United States under President Donald Trump restarts relations with Moscow.

Xi and Putin spoke on the phone Monday for the first time since the Trump administration began to shift U.S. foreign policy away from its alliance with Europe in favor of Russia.

“History and reality show that China and Russia are good neighbors that cannot be moved away, and true friends who share wealth and woe,” Xi told Putin, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.

“The development strategies and foreign policies of China and Russia are for the long-term,” he added, noting that their ties wouldn’t be influenced by “any third party.”

The Kremlin described the call as “warm and friendly” but did not provide further commitments to its relationship with China, as Xi did. According to the Chinese readout, however, Putin was the one who made the call to Xi.

“The leaders particularly emphasized that the Russian-Chinese foreign policy link is the most important stabilizing factor in world affairs. It is strategic in nature, is not subject to external influence, and is not directed against anyone,” the Kremlin said.

The call took place as the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine passed. Before the invasion in 2022, Xi and Putin announced their “no limits” partnership. Since then, China has continued to supply Russia’s war machine by purchasing oil and exports of dual-use technologies.

Trump, in recent days, has called the democratically elected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” and blamed Ukraine for the war despite the fact Russia invaded Ukraine. He refused to call Putin, who has killed and jailed his political opponents, a dictator.

“Despite changes in the international situation, China-Russia relations will proceed with ease,” Xi said.

As Trump looks to deliver on his campaign promise to end the war on Day One, now more than 30 days into his presidency, he is looking to Putin to end the fighting in Ukraine in a significant shift of American policy. Top Trump administration officials met Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia and did not invite Ukraine to the table.
