Bill Nye claims Elon Musk wants to replace NOAA weather satellites with Starlink

Bill Nye, known as the “Science Guy,”⁣ has made controversial claims regarding Elon ⁣Musk’s alleged plans to replace NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather satellites with Starlink ‍satellites. ⁤During a CNN interview,Nye accused the⁤ Department of Goverment Efficiency (DOGE) of corruption by targeting NOAA,which recently faced significant staff⁣ layoffs, and suggested that Musk’s intentions with Starlink could undermine public services. He asserted that replacing a government entity with a private company like Starlink represents “fundamental corruption.” Despite his claims,Starlink primarily provides internet services and is not involved in weather tracking. Nye also faced criticism for making misleading statements about the historical prevalence of wildfires⁤ in the‍ Carolinas, which sparked backlash on social media.

Bill Nye claims Elon Musk wants to replace NOAA weather satellites with Starlink

Former television host Bill Nye the “Science Guy” suggested that the Department of Government Efficiency is performing “corruption” and targeting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with plans to replace its weather satellites with Elon Musk‘s Starlink satellites.

The Trump administration’s latest round of mass government terminations included firing hundreds of staffers at the NOAA and the National Weather Service last week.

Protesters gathered outside NOAA headquarters on Monday in response to the layoffs.

Nye, a former mechanical engineer, made claims on CNN about what he believed Musk was doing with NOAA, without offering any evidence.

“Elon Musk and his guys were revving up — and you know, I’m an engineer, we love engineering,” Nye said on Monday. “I used to work on failure effects and modes analysis for airplanes. So these guys found what they thought was the vulnerable part of the U.S. government, which is this digital services office.”

“So they got in there and changed all the passwords and messed everything up as fast as they could. And then along that line, people — the system was not set up for it. But understand what’s going on, by firing people at NOAA,” the former television personality continued.

“By dismantling this public service, you’re not serving the public,” Nye added. “This is in nobody’s best interest.”

He then attempted to tie NOAA and Musk’s business interests.

“NOAA has a lot of satellites, and that’s how these weather predictions are made,” he said. “Well, Mr. Musk has this company, Starlink, and he’s proposing that NOAA be supplanted by a private company.”

Nye called Musk’s work at NOAA “fundamental corruption.”

“This is, it’s just corruption when you’re trying to monopolize a government service,” he claimed.

“So, he found this weak part, this weakness in the U.S. government, exploited it as fast as he could, and now, it’s one thing leading to another and he’s trying to undo a public service and supplant it with one of his. And this is just good old corruption. So, sooner or later, I believe the court system will catch up with these guys. And, so, it’s just going to be, it’s just — talk about efficiency. Destroying a system that was working and then trying to replace it later is inefficient,” Nye said.

According to Starlink’s website, the company provides satellite-based internet services, including streaming, online gaming, and video calls, and is not involved in weather tracking services.

Nye also shared other theories about climate change during his CNN appearance.

“There’s forest fires in the Carolinas? That didn’t use to be a thing, everybody,” he stated.

Social media descended on Nye for his comments on CNN.

“Incoherent and creepy Bill Nye on CNN spins a wild conspiracy theory that Elon Musk is planning on personally taking over NOAA with his guys at Starlink,” a person responded on X.

STATES LAUNCH CAMPAIGNS TO HIRE FEDERAL WORKERS FIRED BY DOGE

“Bill Nye went on CNN to claim wildfires in the Carolinas ‘didn’t use to be a thing’ before climate change. The largest wildfire in the state’s history was in 1976. 5,000 wildfires occur in SC in a typical year. Bill is just another lying radical climate activist,” an X user said.

“Someone should inform Nye about the Clear Pond Fire in mid-April 1976 that seared 30,000 acres in Horry County, or the Gaston Fire in April 1966 that burned nearly 8,000, both of which were larger than the ongoing blaze. Bill Nye is the perfect example of where ignorance collides with arrogance,” another person reacted on X.
