“A sad cavalcade of self owns and unhinged petulance,” Fetterman said in a post on X. “It only makes Trump look more presidential and restrained. We’re becoming the metaphorical car alarms that nobody pays attention to—and it may not be the winning message.”

AL GREEN REMOVED FROM HOUSE CHAMBER AFTER PROTESTING TRUMP ADDRESS

Fetterman criticizing his own party is not unusual. He agreed in early February that his own party was “toxic” in comments reflecting on the 2024 election.

“I think their primary currency was shaming and scolding and talking down to people and telling them, ‘Hey, I know better than you,’ or ‘You’re dopes,’ or ‘You’re a bro,’ or ‘You’re ignorant,’ or ‘How can you be this dumb?’ I can’t imagine it. And then, by the way, they’re fascists. How can you vote for that?’” Fetterman said.

Other Democrats and political commentators have blasted the party for their mode of combatting Trump during his address on Tuesday.

Symone Sanders Townsend, a once-spokeswoman for former President Joe Biden, said the signs were “giving bingo.”

“Why are democrats just sitting there? The signs are not landing. It is giving bingo! Sigh,” she posted on X.

“Update—Democrats: Forget the signs,” former Mike Pence aide Olivia Troye posted on X. “Call out the truth. Get loud. Take a stand. They kicked your colleague Rep. Al Green (D-TX) out for making his voice heard. Meet the moment. The Republicans would & have done this to you. Why are you rolling over & playing dead?”

The signs aren’t a new tactic from Democrats. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) held up a sign that said “war criminal” during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress in July 2024.

Other moves that Democrats took to protest Trump’s address included Green’s outburst, which caused him to be removed from the House chamber, several Democrats wearing pink in protest, and some exiting his address early or not attending altogether.

Swing state Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) gave the Democratic response to Trump, notably saying, “I’m thankful it was Reagan and not Trump in the office in the 1980s.” She argued that Trump was “cozying up to dictators like Vladimir Putin.”
