Jeffries voices confidence in Schumer’s leadership after government funding vote
NEW YORK — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) expressed support for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Tuesday as Democrats fume over his vote on government funding in the Senate.
Speaking at a “Day of Action” event in his Brooklyn-based district, Jeffries told reporters that he has confidence in Schumer after declining to address the same question last week. Schumer has drawn blistering criticism from House Democrats, particularly those on the Left, after he delivered Republicans the Senate votes on a funding bill that lacked Democratic input.
Jeffries and his Democratic colleagues were virtually united in opposing that funding bill in the House, with all but one voting “no.”
“We had a good conversation about the path forward, particularly as it relates to making sure we all speak with one voice in the effort to stop these Medicaid cuts from ever being enacted into law,” Jeffries said.
In a follow-up question, Jeffries said “yes” when asked for clarification if he supports Schumer.
Jeffries met with Schumer on Sunday in an attempt to ease the cross-chamber tensions and subsequently issued a joint statement promising to “fight until we win this fight” on opposing cuts to Medicaid.
The focus on Medicaid comes as Republicans search for hundreds of billions in offsets to pass President Donald Trump’s tax and border agenda.
Schumer, for his part, defended his leadership in a Tuesday morning interview and said he and Jeffries were aligned.
So far, no Senate Democrats have called for his removal, but progressive activists had been planning protests at a book tour that Schumer postponed this week over security concerns.
“I’m the best leader for the Senate,” Schumer told CBS Mornings. “I am the best at winning Senate seats.”
“We’re moving forward,” he added. “Hakeem and I have a plan.”
DEMOCRATS AIM TO UNITE BEHIND OPPOSITION TO MEDICAID CUTS
Jeffries reiterated that message Tuesday, telling the Washington Examiner that Democrats were “aligned on the fights that are in front of us.”
“That’s saving Medicaid, saving Social Security, saving Medicare,” he said, flanked by Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY), the chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus. “Let me be clear, we’re going to take a chainsaw to Project 2025.”
