Byron York advises allies to reduce tariffs for ‘positive reaction’ from Trump
Byron York, chief political correspondent for the Washington Examiner, advised European allies of the U.S. to reduce their tariffs to garner a “positive reaction” from President Donald Trump. Following Trump’s declaration of tariffs against 86 countries, many of these nations, including the U.K., have faced increased duties due to their own tariffs on American goods. York noted on Fox News that a reduction in tariffs from Europe could positively influence Trump, suggesting that world leaders should be aware of the importance of their initial interactions with him. He mentioned that around 50 countries are interested in negotiating tariffs with Trump, while also acknowledging that Trump might have reasons to refrain from making deals. Ultimately, York indicated that a key goal for Trump is to encourage more manufacturing to return to the U.S., evidenced by tariffs impacting even largely uninhabited countries used to circumvent trade restrictions.
Byron York advises allies to reduce tariffs for ‘positive reaction’ from Trump
Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York recommended that European allies to the United States reduce their tariffs to appease President Donald Trump.
Trump announced tariffs against 86 countries in total last week. A majority of these countries received them because they had their own tariffs against U.S. goods. The U.K. for example faced a 10% tariff on Saturday after it was already the recipient of the 25% tariff on foreign automobiles, one of its top exports.
“It’s going to be very important to see what the very first people who talk to the president, world leaders when they talk to the president, what they come away with,” York said on Fox News’s Fox & Friends. “Europe has been holding back. But it sounds to me like it would be a good idea if they reduced their tariffs. That could meet a very positive reaction from President Trump.
There appear to be many in line to be first as Trump administration officials claimed that some 50 countries signaled their willingness to negotiate. However, York also acknowledged Trump could be motivated to not strike a deal with allies, even as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit Trump Monday.

“I think the biggest goal of the president’s number of goals for this is to bring more manufacturing back into the United States. He talks all the time about all of the deals he has made with foreign companies to invest large amounts of money into the United States,” York said.
The Trump administration even went as far as imposing tariffs on countries that are largely uninhabited or imposed no tariffs on U.S. goods in order to prevent tariffed countries from shipping their goods from there and avoid the tax on their goods.
