Warren claims every Democrat at the ready to fight tariffs – Washington Examiner

In a recent statement, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) expressed her strong opposition to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, emphasizing that the Senate does not need to wait for judicial intervention to take action. Warren argued that every Democrat is prepared to challenge Trump’s authority regarding tariffs, urging Congress to leverage its legislative power to alleviate what she termed the chaos created by the President’s actions. She predicted that the tariffs coudl lead to rising prices and job losses, potentially forecasting a recession. Furthermore, Warren highlighted that a legislative vote to reverse Trump’s emergency declaration could occur within 15 days. Two bills aimed at restoring tariff powers to Congress are in the pipeline, which are being supported by both Republican and Democratic members in the House. However, the White House has indicated that Trump would veto these proposed measures. As the debate over tariffs continues, many countries are actively seeking negotiations to mitigate further impositions.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) suggested that senators “don’t have to wait for the courts to step in” to stop President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Trump announced a 90-day pause on the majority of foreign tariffs, which have leveled to 10%. The only standouts are Mexico and Canada, in that their respective 10% tariffs have already begun, and also China‘s 145% tariff. While the president’s grounds to levy tariffs in times of war could be challenged in the courts, Warren suggested the Senate could stop them with their own legislative authority.

“The courts may step in here, but we don’t have to wait for the courts to step in here. Look, every Democrat is ready to go, to push back and take away from the president the power he’s now exercising and the chaos he’s now creating. The question is whether or not the Republicans will join us in this,” Warren said Sunday on ABC News’s This Week. “It is time for Congress right now to step into the emergency that Donald Trump has created, use our own powers, and roll back this chaos and opportunities for corruption.”

Warren forecasted a recession amid the tariffs, predicting that “prices will go up and people will lose their jobs” and leave others “never able to fully recover.” According to the senator, a vote to undo Trump’s emergency declaration could come as soon as the next 15 days.

Two bills in the House and the Senate are slated to restore tariff powers to Congress. At the moment, Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-CO), and Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) sponsor the House Trade Review Act of 2025. Bacon told the Washington Examiner the bill is supported by 10 more Republican members of Congress, which is more than the slim majority Republicans have in the House.

However, the White House said Trump will veto the bill, including the equivalent bill in the Senate.

Further tariffs are slated to continue on July 9 unless countries negotiate a better deal with the administration. Some 75 countries contacted the White House this week to talk Trump off of a tariff against them.
