Conservatives unite to condemn attack against Josh Shapiro

Members of the Trump administration and other Republican lawmakers offered condolences to Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) after he and his family narrowly escaped an arson attack early Sunday morning.

The Governor’s Mansion in Harrisburg sustained fire damage and broken windows. Cody Balmer, 38, is facing charges of attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault. He is accused of starting the fire in the middle of the night. Shapiro, his wife, children, some family members staying with them at the time, and their two dogs were all safely evacuated.

Vice President JD Vance set the tone for the response from Republican politicians.

“Thanks be to God that Governor Shapiro and his family were unharmed in this attack,” Vance wrote on X Sunday. “Really disgusting violence, and I hope whoever did it is brought swiftly to justice.”

“Deeply disturbing and very scary to read this horrific news. This violent arsonist criminal must absolutely be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) wrote. “Sending our prayers to the entire Shapiro family after this horrific crime.”

“I am deeply relieved that Governor Shapiro and his family are safe, thankful for the first responders who arrived on the scene, and applaud the police work that resulted in an arrest just hours ago,” Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote.

“Yumi and I are praying for Governor Josh Shapiro and his family following the despicable act of arson that forced them from their home. We must all stand in solidarity against acts of violence and intimidation—there is no place for them in this nation,” Former Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD) wrote.

“I’m deeply relieved that Governor Shapiro and his family are safe after yesterday’s arson attack,” Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) wrote. “This kind of hate and violence has no place in our country—ever. Grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their quick response in preventing an even greater tragedy.”

While President Donald Trump hasn’t commented publicly on the matter as of Monday morning, Shapiro acknowledged the president’s support.

FOR JOSH SHAPIRO, THE ARSON ATTACK WAS PERSONAL

“I spoke a couple of hours ago with Director Kash Patel of the FBI. He promised all of the resources of the federal government. He was extremely kind and courteous and thoughtful in his conversation with me, and I thanked him and the women and men of the FBI and the president of the United States for their support,” Shapiro said at a press conference.

When Trump himself came under a political attack in Butler, Pennsylvania, seven months ago, he suffered a gunshot wound to the ear. Then, an attendee behind him, Corey Comperatore, was fatally shot before law enforcement shot and killed the gunman. Shapiro was quick to visit the crime scene in the following hours as he oversaw the law enforcement response.
