Rubio: US could ‘move on’ from brokering Russia-Ukraine peace deal

In a recent discussion, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the U.S. might move away from facilitating a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine if signs of progress are not apparent soon. After meeting with Ukrainian and European officials in Paris, Rubio emphasized the urgency for the U.S. to determine within days whether such a deal is achievable in the near future. He indicated that President Donald Trump has invested considerable effort in the peace negotiations, but Rubio noted that other pressing matters also require notable attention. The potential shift in focus came shortly after Trump announced a forthcoming minerals deal with Ukraine, which is still under negotiation.Rubio acknowledged the complexities surrounding a peace agreement, asserting that while rapid resolutions are unlikely, assessment of the feasibility of progress is necessary.

Rubio floats idea that US will ‘move on’ from Russia-Ukraine peace deal

The U.S. could be ready to move on from brokering a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested on Friday that President Donald Trump will halt his efforts to work on a peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war if there aren’t legitimate signs of progress in the upcoming days. Rubio’s warning comes after meeting with Ukrainian and European officials in Paris, France.

“We’re not going to continue with this endeavor for weeks and months on end,” Rubio said after meeting with officials on Thursday. “So we need to determine very quickly now, and I’m talking about a matter of days, whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks.”

Rubio stressed that these were Trump’s sentiments and that the president had spent much time trying to broker a deal. However, the secretary of state said other consequential matters required just as much time and attention.

“The president feels very strongly about that,” Rubio said. “He has dedicated a lot of time and energy to this … this is important, but there are a lot of other really important things going on that deserve just as much, if not more attention.”

The notion that the U.S. could walk away from brokering a deal came after Trump announced on Thursday that a minerals deal with Ukraine would be signed next week

“We have a minerals deal which I guess is going to be signed on Thursday… next Thursday,” Trump said. “Soon. And I assume they’re going to live up to the deal. So we’ll see. But we have a deal on that.”

Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent later elaborated on the potential deal, stating that both sides are “still working on the details.” He added that they were “shooting for around April 26” to complete the agreement.

However, arranging a peace deal to end the war remains a challenging objective. It is a complex situation with multiple variables, a difficulty that Rubio acknowledged in his comments on Friday.

“There’s no one saying this can be done in 12 hours,” Rubio added later. “But we want to see how far apart it is and whether those differences can even be narrowed, if it’s even possible to get movement within the period of time we have in mind.”
