Eric Adams warns Democrats have lost ‘respect for the office’ of the president – Washington Examiner

In a recent interview, New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed concern over what he perceives as a diminishing respect for the presidential office, particularly under the Trump governance. Adams emphasized that, despite personal political preferences, it is indeed crucial to respect the office itself and work collaboratively for the benefit of the populace. He has cooperated with Trump on immigration policies, which has drawn criticism from some quarters. Adams also highlighted major improvements in public safety, noting important declines in gun violence and homicides in the city under his leadership. However, his administration has faced challenges, including resignations among deputy mayors and scrutiny of financial transactions involving associates. Looking ahead,Adams is running for reelection as an independent candidate, diverging from his Democratic roots.

Eric Adams warns Democrats have lost ‘respect for the office’ of the president

New York City Mayor Eric Adams lamented the lack of respect toward the Trump administration.

Since President Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term in January, Adams has cooperated with him on immigration policy and deportation efforts, and has faced criticism.

“It’s about respecting the office. People lose sight of that. You don’t all of a sudden become anti-American because the person you want to be president is not president. It’s the office. When you don’t respect the office, you’re sending the wrong message. I respect the office. There’s a president called President Trump. I’m going to work with that president to produce for the people of our city because I respect the office,” Adams said on Fox News’s My View with Lara Trump.

Almost immediately after Trump took office, Adams saw the five federal corruption charges against him dismissed by the Department of Justice. This came as Adams was seeking to expedite the trial in order to focus on his reelection campaign.

“You have a different view of the city when you put on a bulletproof vest for 22 years and you protected the children and families of this city. I see the byproduct of failed legislation and those who want to go into their own corners,” Adams said of his time as a New York City police officer.

Under Adams, the city recently saw its lowest quarter in history for instances of gun violence, which decreased by nearly 25% since last quarter with only 140 shootings. As of Thursday, nearly one-third of these shootings resulted in arrests and police have recovered over 1,300 illegal firearms. Homicides were also reported to have their second-lowest quarter ever with 17 taking place, an over 50% decrease from this time last year.

However, people around Adams’s office have suffered consequences for their involvement with the mayor. Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello had his pastoral duties reduced nearly to none when the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn discovered money transfers to the New York City mayor’s office. Four deputy mayors under Adams have also since resigned.

While New York City elected Adams as a Democratic candidate in 2022, he has since decided to run for reelection as an independent.
