Ukraine says Russia violated ‘Easter truce’ over 2,000 times – Washington Examiner

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has reported that Russia violated its announced “Easter truce” over 2,000 times on Sunday, with significant military activity concentrated in the city of Pokrovsk. Violations included 67 attacks, 1,355 instances of artillery fire, and 673 drone uses. Zelensky emphasized that Russia failed to honor the ceasefire agreement, which was intended to pause hostilities during the Easter weekend, and he reiterated his call for a longer, 30-day ceasefire. Despite the violations, he noted that there were no air raid alerts that day, suggesting an opportunity for a ceasefire focused on halting strikes using long-range drones and missiles on civilian targets. He warned that any refusal from Russia to agree to this proposal would indicate its intention to prolong the conflict.

Ukraine says Russia violated ‘Easter truce’ over 2,000 times

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that Russia violated its “Easter truce,” which was supposed to see a pause in fighting over the weekend, over 2,000 times on Sunday.

In an X post, Zelensky said the violations of the truce on Easter Sunday included 67 Russian attacks on various positions that were mostly concentrated in the city of Pokrovsk, about 35 miles north of Donetsk. There were also 1,355 cases of Russian artillery fire and 673 cases of Russian drone use.

The Ukrainian president said this is clear evidence Russia has “failed” to uphold the Easter weekend truce and reiterated his call for a longer, 30-day ceasefire.

“In practice, across all main frontline directions, Russia has failed to uphold its own promise of ceasefire. And almost an entire day wasn’t enough for Russia to respond to our Ukrainian proposal for a full ceasefire — starting now, from Easter, and lasting 30 days,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky did report that there were no “air raid alerts” on Sunday and proposed a 30-day ceasefire on the use of long-range drones and strikes on civilian infrastructure.

“However, there were no air raid alerts today. Hence, this is a format of ceasefire that has been achieved and that is the easiest to extend. Ukraine proposes to cease any strikes using long-range drones and missiles on civilian infrastructure for a period of at least 30 days, with the possibility of extension,” he said.

Zelensky added that if Russia refuses to agree on this, it is “proof that it intends to continue doing only those things which destroy human lives and prolong the war.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced over the weekend a pause in fighting that would last until midnight local time on Monday. There were already reported Russian violations of the truce shortly after it took effect on Saturday afternoon.
