Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia violated the agreed-upon “Easter truce” nearly 3,000 times over the weekend. On Easter Sunday alone, there were 96 attacks focused around the city of Pokrovsk, along with 1,882 instances of artillery fire and over 950 drone strikes.Zelensky emphasized that these violations illustrate RussiaS failure to uphold the truce and reiterated his call for a more extended ceasefire lasting 30 days.He noted that there were no air raid alerts that day, indicating a potential basis for a humanitarian ceasefire, specifically suggesting a halt on strikes against civilian infrastructure. Zelensky warned that if Russia rejects this proposal, it would confirm its intention to continue the conflict and harm civilians. Despite the announcement of a ceasefire by Russian President Vladimir Putin, reports of violations quickly emerged.

Ukraine says Russia violated ‘Easter truce’ nearly 3,000 times

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that Russia violated its “Easter truce,” which was supposed to see a pause in fighting over the weekend, nearly 3,000 times on Sunday.

In an X post, Zelensky said the violations of the truce on Easter Sunday included 96 Russian attacks on various positions that were mostly concentrated in the city of Pokrovsk, about 35 miles north of Donetsk. There were also 1,882 cases of Russian artillery fire and over 950 cases of Russian drone use.

The Ukrainian president posted on X earlier Sunday that these violations are clear evidence Russia has “failed” to uphold the Easter weekend truce and reiterated his call for a longer, 30-day ceasefire.

“In practice, across all main frontline directions, Russia has failed to uphold its own promise of ceasefire. And almost an entire day wasn’t enough for Russia to respond to our Ukrainian proposal for a full ceasefire — starting now, from Easter, and lasting 30 days,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky did report that there were no “air raid alerts” and proposed a 30-day ceasefire on the use of long-range drones and strikes on civilian infrastructure.

“However, there were no air raid alerts today. Hence, this is a format of ceasefire that has been achieved and that is the easiest to extend. Ukraine proposes to cease any strikes using long-range drones and missiles on civilian infrastructure for a period of at least 30 days, with the possibility of extension,” he said.

Zelensky added that if Russia refuses to agree on this, it is “proof that it intends to continue doing only those things which destroy human lives and prolong the war.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced over the weekend a pause in fighting that would last until midnight local time on Monday. There were already reported Russian violations of the truce shortly after it took effect on Saturday afternoon.
