New York City investigates clash between Orthodox Jews and protesters
Adams launches investigation after Orthodox Jews clash with Palestinian activists at NYC synagogue
New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced authorities are investigating after Orthodox Jews were accused of violently clashing with anti-Israel activists who “surrounded” the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters.
Over the past week, there have been a series of pro-Palestinian protests against Itamar Ben-Gvir, a member of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Cabinet, who was scheduled to give a speech at Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters as well as another Brooklyn synagogue, Congregation Shaare Zion. Both sides have attracted criticism for their actions, as Hassidic Jews violently clashed with several anti-Israel activists, while a Republican lawmaker condemned “pro-terrorist antisemitic anarchists” for “shouting vile antisemitic death chants and attacking Jews.”
On Sunday, Adams revealed that the New York Police Department is investigating “a series of incidents stemming from clashing protests on Thursday that began when a group of anti-Israel protesters surrounded the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters — a Jewish house of worship — in Brooklyn.”
“Let me be clear: None of this is acceptable, in fact, it is despicable,” the mayor added. “New York City will always be a place where people can peacefully protest, but we will not tolerate violence, trespassing, menacing, or threatening.”
His comments came after a group of Charedi men mistook a Brooklyn woman as a participant in an anti-Israel demonstration on Thursday evening. According to video recordings and the woman’s account to the Associated Press, the men kicked, threatened to rape, and chanted “death to Arabs” at her. Police said one person was arrested and five others were issued summons following the demonstration at the Chabad-Lubavitch.
After police came to the woman’s aid, hundreds of the pro-Israel counterprotesters followed the woman and law enforcement for blocks.
“I felt sheer terror,” the woman said. “I realized at that point that I couldn’t lead this mob of men to my home. I had nowhere to go. I didn’t know what to do. I was just terrified.”
Adams revealed Sunday that police had spoken to another woman on the pro-Palestinian side of the protest who said she suffered injuries at the hands of counterprotesters on Thursday evening.
In comments to the outlet, a Chabad-Lubavitch spokesman denounced the violence, while saying that the pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the synagogue had “called for the genocide of Jews in support of terrorists and terrorism.”
“The violent provocateurs who called for the genocide of Jews in support of terrorists and terrorism — outside a synagogue, in a Jewish neighborhood, where some of the worst antisemitic violence in American history was perpetrated, and where many residents share deep bonds with the victims of Oct. 7 — did so in order to intimidate, provoke, and instill fear,” Rabbi Motti Seligson said.
“We condemn the crude language and violence of the small breakaway group of young people; such actions are entirely unacceptable and wholly antithetical to the Torah’s values. The fact that a possibly uninvolved bystander got pulled into the melee further underscores the point,” the spokesman continued.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) weighed in on the incident on Friday, accusing one of the pro-Palestinian protesters, a “violent radical,” of “storming” into the Chabad Lubavitch where Gvir was speaking.
HARVARD STANDS GROUND AGAINST TRUMP ADMINISTRATION AMID ANTISEMITISM BATTLE
“Pro-terrorist antisemitic anarchists violently targeted one of the holiest Jewish sites in America, shouting vile antisemitic death chants and attacking Jews as they gathered in peace,” she said in a statement.
“This vicious, destructive antisemitism is part of a disturbing and growing trend across our country. I have been warning about these extremist, anti-American groups for years – they have no morals, no respect for civil discourse, and they resort to dangerous violence when confronted with truth,” she continued.
