After months of razor wire fencing blocking off areas of Capitol Hill, residents and visitors are starting to see progress as the outer barriers are dismantled.

Those who wish to visit the Capitol will still have to wait, as there is a break preventing the general public from approaching the Capitol Building.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have called for the fence’s removal. They emphasized it is costly, unsightly and uninviting to those who want to visit the beacon of democracy.

Americans are optimistic the gesture means a more unified country is on the horizon.

“The voicing of individual thoughts and freedoms is becoming contrary to the person beside you, to other cultures, and has a chance of creating conflict and destroying the fabric of our society,” Illinois resident Christopher Reyes said. “It is my hope that we can all come together and irrespective of the fact, maybe if my upbringing or my value system is different from yours, that somehow we can all peacefully coexist and enjoy the promise that America has given us.”

However, residents have expressed concern the inner fence could become a permanent fixture at the U.S. Capitol.
