Half Of Americans ‘Disapprove’ Of Biden Handling Of Border Crisis

Three new polls seem to indicate that Americans disapprove of how President Joe Biden is handling a growing child migrant crisis on the United States-Mexico border and, in some cases, the president’s approval is below 50% on illegal immigration despite administration efforts to downplay the issue.

Morning Consult reports that, while voters are generally bullish on Biden’s overall job performance — he is, after all, in a honeymoon period, having been in office just two months — nearly half of voters polled believe Biden is moving in the wrong direction on immigration and border control.

“According to a new Morning Consult/Politico poll, 49 percent of voters disapprove of Biden’s handling of immigration issues, up 8 percentage points since mid-March, while 40 percent approve, down 6 points over the same time period,” the outlet reported Wednesday.

Morning Consult noted that the change is coming, in large part, from the left, and that Democrats are becoming increasingly concerned about what appears to be an immigration crisis on the southern border.

“The rapid movement came from across the political spectrum, with the share of Democrats who disapprove of his handling of immigration increasing 11 points (to 20 percent), and the share of Republicans who said the same up 7 points (to 84 percent), since Biden took office,” Morning Consult said.

The numbers are even worse for Biden in a National Public Radio poll also released this week. There, Biden is below the 50% mark for approval on his handling of immigration.

“[J]ust 34% of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of immigration, while 53% disapprove. A majority of independents and even a quarter of Democrats disapprove of the job he’s doing on the issue,” NPR reported.

An ABC News poll puts Biden even further underwater, with a shocking 57% of respondents telling the network they do not approve of the job President Biden is doing on immigration.

Biden, the network said, “is facing some early tests in his first two months in office, finding himself underwater for his handling of gun violence after two mass shootings in a week and the surge of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, which has brought at least 18,000 unaccompanied children into U.S. custody.”

“An equal 57% of Americans disapprove of his approach on both issues, while just over 4 in 10 Americans approve,” ABC News reported.

The Biden administration has been somewhat successful in keeping the child migrant crisis out of the headlines, but after weeks of stalling, has finally caved to pressure to allow media tours of migrant facilities operating well over capacity. On Wednesday, the Biden administration allowed, for the first time, a pool reporter and photographer to depict life inside one of the detention camps, where children are packed shoulder to shoulder in small rooms.

At the current moment, an estimated 15,500 unaccompanied minors are in Customs and Border Protection custody spread across several states, including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Florida. The Biden administration is reportedly working to expand the number of detention facilities available.

Vice President Kamala Harris was charged, late last week, with overseeing the situation at the border. She has yet to hold a press conference on the subject and her spokesperson told reporters on Friday that she has no plans to visit the detention facilities and will, instead, pursue “diplomacy.”
