Drew Barrymore Says She Now Regrets Working With Woody Allen
Actress Drew Barrymore now says she regrets working with director Woody Allen when she starred in the 1996 romantic comedy “Everyone Says I Love You.”
During an episode of her talk show, Barrymore interviewed Woody Allen’s adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, who claimed that Allen molested her in 1993. Farrow maintains that her former step-father “groomed her” and then abused her while he was married to actress Mia Farrow. Allen denies the allegations.
At the time Barrymore starred in the romantic comedy, she said the great career “calling card” in the mid-1990s was to have made a film with Woody Allen.
“I worked with Woody Allen. I did a film with him in 1996 called, ‘Everyone Says I Love You,’ and there was no higher career calling card than to work with Woody Allen,” Barrymore told Farrow, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter (THR). “Then I had children, and it changed me because I realized that I was one of the people who was basically gaslit into not looking at a narrative beyond what I was being told. And I see what is happening in the industry now and that is because of you making that brave choice. So thank you for that.”
Farrow thanked Barrymore for her change of heart.
“Hearing what you just said, I am trying not to cry right now,” she said. “It is just so meaningful because it’s easy for me to say, ‘Of course you shouldn’t work with him; he’s a jerk, he’s a monster,’ but I just find it incredibly brave and incredibly generous that you would say to me that my story and what I went through was important enough to you to reconsider that.”
After watching the HBO docuseries, “Allen v. Farrow,” which chronicled Woody Allen and Mia Farrow’s battle over custody of then-adolescent Dylan and explored Dylan’s allegations of sexual abuse, Dylan Farrow said she discovered a newfound respect for her mother, Mia.
“I would’ve loved to have been able to watch the series with her,” Farrow said. “At the time, that just wasn’t possible; we were in separate quarantine pods, unfortunately. I really heard everything from her after the fact. It was just a very strange pathway that we navigated separately and together, but I think it definitely changed a lot about how me and my mom relate to each other and interact with each other, and I think there’s a very renewed level of just respect, just woman to woman.”
Since 1993, Dylan Farrow has maintained that Woody Allen sexually molested her while he dated her mother, Mia Farrow. Allen has emphatically denied the accusation, claiming that Mia coached Dylan as part of a vicious custody dispute. The charges were ultimately dismissed by authorities and Moses Farrow, Dylan’s brother, has defended Allen’s innocence while claiming that his mother Mia was the abusive parent.
Woody Allen and his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, denounced the HBO docuseries as a “shoddy hit piece,” according to The New York Times.
“These documentarians had no interest in the truth. Instead, they spent years surreptitiously collaborating with the Farrows and their enablers to put together a hatchet job riddled with falsehoods,” a spokesperson for the couple said in a statement issued through Allen’s sister, Letty Aronson. “Woody and Soon-Yi were approached less than two months ago and given only a matter of days ‘to respond.’ Of course, they declined to do so.”
“As has been known for decades, these allegations are categorically false,” the statement continued. “Multiple agencies investigated them at the time and found that, whatever Dylan Farrow may have been led to believe, absolutely no abuse had ever taken place. It is sadly unsurprising that the network to air this is HBO – which has a standing production deal and business relationship with Ronan Farrow. While this shoddy hit piece may gain attention, it does not change the facts.”
