Multiple fatalities, injuries in Calif. shooting, suspect dead

A Valley Transportation Authority employee opened fire on his co-workers Wednesday morning, leaving eight people dead and several others injured. The incident occurred in San Jose at a VTA facility, which provides maintenance for trains.
Sheriff’s deputies confirmed the suspect was a VTA employee along with several of the victims. Police said they have found evidence of potential explosive devices and are now sweeping the building. Authorities are urging people to stay away from the area as an investigation is underway.
The shooter was identified as Samuel Cassidy, 57, and was pronounced dead at the scene following a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo offered condolences to families of the victims and said more information will be released as the investigation continues.

“This is a horrific day for our city and it is a tragic day for the VTA family, and our heart pains for the families and the co-workers because we know so many are feeling deeply this loss of their loved ones and their friends,” said Liccardo.
VTA light rail operations in the area have been suspended for the remainder of the day.
