A Philadelphia Fire Department engine slammed into the side of an apartment building while responding to a nearby house fire on Thursday. The crash occurred Thursday afternoon in North Philadelphia.

Four firefighters and one civilian were transported to the hospital in stable condition following the collision. Officials say no one inside the apartment complex was injured.

Eyewitnesses say the fire engine swerved to avoid a collision with a car at an intersection. The impact sent the fire engine into the four-story building at the corner of Girard Avenue and Seventh Street.

Crews worked to slowly remove the fire engine safely without causing the building to collapse.  Officials say they are concerned with the building’s structural integrity and have teams checking for potential gas leaks.

Mayor Jim Kenney took to Twitter to say, “praying for a quick and full recovery for all involved.”
