Stacey Abrams Supports Joe Manchin’s Voting Rights Compromise, Which Includes ID Requirements
Stacey Abrams announced her support for West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin’s voting rights compromise on CNN’s “New Day” Thursday morning.
“What Senator Manchin is putting forward are some basic building blocks that we need to ensure that democracy is accessible, no matter your geography,” Abrams said.
“Those provisions that he’s setting forth are strong ones that will create [a] level playing field, will create standards that do not vary from state to state, and I think will ensure that every American has improved access to the right to vote, despite the onslaught of state legislation seeking to restrict access to the right to vote,” she said.

Manchin’s proposed compromise is an attempt to bridge the gap between the For the People Act, which passed the House in a near party-line vote, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act that Manchin supports. (RELATED: Manchin Meets With Republicans In Hopes Of Reaching Compromise On Voting Rights Bill)
The compromise includes voter identification requirements but would allow alternative identification, such as utility bills, to be accepted. Abrams, who previously called Republican efforts to restrict voting in Georgia “Jim Crow 2.0,” said she supports the requirements.
“That’s one of the fallacies of Republican talking points [that’s] been deeply disturbing. No one has ever objected to having to prove who you are to vote,” she said. “What has been problematic is the type of restrictive ID that we’ve seen pop up … I reject restrictive voter identification designed to keep people out of the process.”
