A five-story building has collapsed in Northwest Washington, D.C., leaving multiple people injured. The building was reportedly under construction when the collapse occurred.

On Thursday, fire officials said they finally freed a construction worker who was trapped under the rubble after over an hour of work. According to officials, the worker was under about “three floors of debris.”

“He was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threating injuries and we’re going to be turning this scene over to D.C. R.A. (Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs) and the owner to make sure that it gets mitigated properly,” said Chief John Donnelly of the District of Columbia Fire and EMS.

Video from the scene showed teams using saws and other equipment in order to free the worker who was alert and speaking during the rescue operation.

Four other workers were also pulled from the rubble and all five suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Using search dogs, officials went through the debris to ensure no one else was trapped.

At this time, the cause of the collapse is unclear and is currently being investigated by local authorities.
