A New Jersey judge spoke out one year after her son was fatally shot in a targeted attack. During an interview on Monday, Federal Judge Esther Salas said her faith has given her the strength to forgive her son’s killer.

A gunman opened fire on Salas’s home in July 2020, which wounded her husband and killed 20-year-old Daniel Anderl. Salas said her son gave his life for her and her husband.

The judge added she couldn’t walk around with resentment or hate.

“I realize that in some part it’s important to forgive. It helps you be open to the love that people want to give you,” she expressed. “I think it helps the person that’s injured to also move forward, not on, but move forward.”

Salas has continued to push for increased protection for federal judges through Daniel’s Law, which was a bill reintroduced to Congress last week as threats against judges have continued to rise. She went on to say her son’s killer took the most important thing in her life, but he would take nothing else.
