Russia pushes Biden to rejoin arms control accords exited by Trump

Senior Russian and U.S. diplomats met in Geneva while seeking to restart talks on nuclear weapons controls. The meetings took place Thursday with the sides discussing mutual monitoring of ballistic missiles, nuclear warheads and heavy bomber fleets.
The talks come a year after President Trump declined to extend any nuclear accords without the participation of China. Russia is now expecting Joe Biden to reduce America’s nuclear capabilities.
“It will be almost a year since the last meeting in this format,” said Andrey Baklitskiy, senior research fellow at the Center for Advanced American Studies. “We are starting as a new U.S. administration, we will be starting pretty much from scratch. ”
Russia approved the extension of the new start treaty back in January and is now urging Biden administration ‘s officials to rejoin that deal. Otherwise, Russian officials said Moscow will continue to deploy highly advanced nuclear weapons.

“For example, the Biden administration in their annual compliance, arms control compliance, report upheld Trump claim that Russia has engaged in low-yield nuclear testing, unilateral testing moratorium,” Baklitskiy continued. “So, that’s, you know, that’s still on the table.”
