FACT CHECK: Was Hunter Biden Arrested By The Military?
A post shared on Facebook claims the U.S. military recently arrested Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, as he was attempting to re-enter the country.
Verdict: False
There is no evidence Biden was arrested by the military. The claim originated from a website that says it publishes satire.
Fact Check:
The Sept. 1 post making the claim includes additional text that reads, “Elements of the U.S. military working under JAG authority arrested Hunter Biden on Monday morning as he and two underage companions tried to reenter the United States.” JAG stands for Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Neither the Justice Department nor the Department of Defense has put out a press release about Biden being arrested by the military. An incident to that effect would likely prompt a statement from the White House as well. Had the president’s son been arrested at the airport on Monday, it would have garnered coverage from national news outlets.
The text in the Facebook post matches the headline and first sentence of an Aug. 30 article published by Real Raw News. The website Real Raw News states on its “About Us” page that it contains “humor, parody, and satire.” While Real Raw News includes that Disclaimer, the Facebook post fails to issue a similar warning, portraying the story as real news.
Check Your Fact previously debunked rumors about Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, former White House chief of staff John Podesta and former Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin being arrested by the U.S. military. In those cases, a Department of Defense spokesperson confirmed the claims, which originated from Real Raw News articles, were false.
