New sweeping ordinance aims to remove homelessness presence in L.A.

A new law in Los Angeles has aimed to remove the homeless presence in public areas. A sweeping ordinance went into effect on Friday, which has banned sleeping and homelessness in certain parts of the Los Angeles area.

Officials stated the law prohibited any interference with ADA handicap access points. Once a resolution has been passed, storing property or obstructing the public right of way, such as sleeping and camping, would be illegal within 500 feet of schools, daycares, public parks and libraries.

City council member Kevin de Leon explained, “what’s been voted on, what’s in effect today is dealing with the blocking of ADA folks who adhere to the Americans Disabilities Act, active doorways as well as loading docks.”

The city county is set to reconvene in two weeks to approve specific areas where homeless encampments will be prohibited.
