Daniil Medvedev defeats Novak Djokovic to win U.S. Open

Russian player Daniil Medvedev beat out number one ranked Novak Djokovic to win the U.S. Open. The 25-year-old earned his first major title on Sunday after besting Djokovic in three sets. Medvedev won teach set six-to-four games and largely controlled the flow of the final.

Djokovic was aiming to become only the third man to complete a grand slam sweep, which is to win all four major tournaments in the sport in the same calendar year. Medvedev commended Djokovic following the match while praising his abilities and apologizing to his fans for upsetting his bid to make history.

“First of all, I want to say sorry for you fans and Novak because I mean, we all know what he was going for today and I just want to say that,” Medvedev stated, ” I never said this to anybody, but I’ll say it right now: for me, you are the greatest tennis player in the history.”

The U.S. Open victory marks Medvedev’s first gram slam title after falling short in the quarter and semi-final matches the past three years.
