An officer was fatally shot in Harris County, Texas. After nearly 31-years of service with the Houston Police Department, Senior Officer William Bill Jeffrey was reportedly shot multiple times on Monday while trying to serve a narcotics arrest warrant. The other officer, Sgt. Michael Vance, is in stable condition after receiving several shots to the leg.

The two officers had reportedly knocked on an apartment door in the early morning on Monday, where they then questioned the woman who answered the door on the location of the suspect. At that point, the suspect, 30-year-old Deon Ledet, appeared and started firing. The shots struck the officers. The officers returned fire and killed the suspect.

Jeffrey, being shot multiple times, eventually succumbed to his injuries. He’s survived by his wife and child.

“Thirty-one years of service, just a few days short of that,” stated Chief Troy Finner of the Houston Police Department in regards to o the senior officer. “Most of us know him personally. I’ve known him my entire career and just as his wife said, what a great man, what a great officer.”

Later in the day, dozens of officers formed a procession for the fallen officer.

“This has been a tragic day today; it is another reminder that police work is inherently dangerous and you never know,” Chief Finner continued. “Police officers never know what they’re going to face when they leave their homes during the course of their duty.”

Ledet has reportedly had 18 arrests since 2008 ranging from aggravated assault, burglary, evading arrest and more. An internal investigation will reportedly be conducted following the shooting.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey’s wife Suzanne, who also served in the Houston Police Department but is now retired, said the city “lost the very best.”
