House passes Surface Transportation Extension Act

The House passed an emergency stopgap measure to ensure essential infrastructure would maintain funding. On Friday night, the House passed the Surface Transportation Extension Act in a 365 to 51 vote.
The act will allow funding to continue for projects aimed at building, maintaining or repairing things such as highways, bridges and railways through the end of the month. The vote was a rare example of bipartisanship after days of fighting a near total government shutdown.
Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) went on to say, “let me be clear, the speaker’s partisan process is what led us to this point and this chaos highlights more than ever the need to be working across the aisle.”

The act extended funding for an additional 30 days while Congress continues to negotiate a more permanent solution. It now heads to the Senate, which is expected to vote sometime on Saturday.
