House Democrats’ Campaign Arm Posts Record Fundraising As They Defend Narrow Majority
House Democrats’ campaign arm announced Thursday that it raised almost $14.5 million in September and $35.8 million in 2021’s third quarter.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) said its total fundraising surpassed records for an off-year. It added that it had almost $63 million cash-on-hand as Democrats seek to hold onto their 220-212 House majority come next November’s midterm elections.
“The stakes are high and we believe voters will reject (Republicans’) dangerous vision for America, which is about pushing junk science while Americans die despite access to life-saving vaccines, openly attacking our elections, and allowing women’s rights to be rolled away,” said New York Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, the DCCC chair. “House Democrats and Speaker Pelosi have stood firm in our fight building a more prosperous and inclusive nation and American voters see that.”
The DCCC’s totals were higher than those of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which reported raising $12.2 in September and $25.8 million in the third quarter. The NRCC, however, has slightly more cash-on-hand, sitting on $65 million. (RELATED: House Republicans Campaign Arm Posts Record Fundraising Total, Has Raised Over $100M In 2021)
Despite House Democrats’ fundraising prowess, they face a potentially difficult election cycle. President Joe Biden’s approval rating has dropped into the mid-40s over the past month, though several recent polls have shown that it may be rising again. Historically, the party out of power does well in the other party’s president’s first midterm elections.
Several top Democrats have announced their retirements, including House Budget Committee Chair John Yarmuth of Kentucky, Rep. Ron Kind, who won twice even as his Wisconsin district voted for former President Donald Trump and Illinois Rep. Cheri Bustos, the DCCC’s former chair.
