Oregon Moves Into AP Top 5, Top Four Remain The Same
We should have known that a weekend of chaos was on the horizon when the College Football Playoff selection committee released their first rankings.
On Saturday, in which only one game was played between ranked opponents, we learned a great deal about the top teams. Most importantly, the only team we should be impressed with is Georgia.
The No. 1 ranked Bulldogs shellacked Missouri 43-6 behind another stifling performance by the best defense in the country, allowing just 273 yards of total offense.
The top four in the Associated Press top-25 remain the same as last week, with Cincinnati, Alabama, and Oklahoma all chasing Georgia. Oklahoma had a bye week; Alabama and Cincinnati failed to impress in close wins.
Cincinnati had an opportunity to make a statement on Saturday — with Tulsa and College Gameday in town — and failed to deliver in a wild 28-20 win.
With just over a minute to play, Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder fumbled on his own two-yard line down, giving Tulsa a chance down eight points. But Tulsa running back Steven Anderson fumbled into the endzone on fourth-and-goal and Cincinnati escaped with a win.
“Well, that was a wild one,” Bearcats coach Luke Fickell said. “It’s about winning against a team that is a much better football team than their record shows.”
Alabama managed just six yards rushing at home against LSU, and needed two fourth-quarter stops from their defense to hold on for a 20-14 win.
Michigan State dropped three spots to No. 8 following an upset loss on the road to Purdue. They’re replaced by Oregon who didn’t have a lead until midway through the second quarter over an unranked Washington team in a 26-16 win.
Ohio State remains at No. 6 even though they struggled to put away a 3-6 Nebraska team in Lincoln. The Buckeyes threw the ball 54 times, with quarterback C.J. Stroud completed 36 of those for 405 yards and two touchdowns, but they only managed three field goals in the second half.
Notre Dame moves up a spot to No. 7 after beating Navy 34-6, with Michigan and Oklahoma State rounding out the top 10.
Wake Forest falls out of the top-10 to No. 13 after losing in a shootout to North Carolina 58-55, ending the Demon Deacons CFP hopes.
Texas A&M moves up to No. 11 after beating Auburn 20-3, while the Tigers drop four spots to No. 16.
