‘A Crossing the Rubicon Kind of Event’: Navarro on Trump Indictment
Peter Navarro, an ex-White House aide, recently spoke out and called the indictment of President Donald Trump and his allies “a crossing the Rubicon kind of event” for Democrats. This statement was made during an appearance on NTD.
The charges against Trump stem from a “hush money” payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election. Daniels had accused Trump of having an affair with her in 2006, a charge that he denies. Although the charges against Trump are considered misdemeanors, the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has elevated them to a felony.
Navarro strongly voiced his opinion against the indictment and considered it “pure persecution that stems from the clear weaponization of our government for partisan purposes.” He believes this is an unprecedented move that has gone too far.
Executive Privilege
In his comments, Navarro highlighted the U.S. legal principle of executive privilege. Navarro, who is currently under federal investigation for contempt of Congress, refused to appear before the Jan. 6 panel during the last Congress. He, along with other Trump advisers, claimed that executive privilege protected him from having to cooperate with the probe.
Navarro still faces criminal proceedings for alleged contempt of Congress and may face up to two years in prison if convicted.
Trump is the first U.S. president to ever be indicted on a criminal charge, according to Navarro. “I myself am the first senior White House adviser and alter ego to the President ever to be charged with contempt of Congress. So these are like crossing the Rubicon kind of events,” he added.
Navarro also criticized Biden’s efforts to strip Trump and his advisers of executive privilege as part of the larger weaponization of the federal government. “Executive privilege goes back to the days of George Washington,” said Navarro, adding that it enhances effective executive decision-making by ensuring the separation of powers.
Specifically, Biden has attempted to retroactively withdraw the claims of Trump and his aides using executive privilege.
When asked about his concerns about the effort to undermine the doctrine of executive privilege, Navarro reiterated, “I want to again reiterate that executive privilege is important for the country, and Biden is attacking that head-on.”
