Man confesses to 1979 Boston murder at FBI office, say prosecutors.

FBI Agents Surprised by Shocking Confession

FBI agents in Portland, Oregon, ‍were taken aback when a 68-year-old man walked into their office and confessed‌ to a gruesome crime committed in ⁣Boston back in 1979.

John Michael Irmer shocked the agents last month‍ by admitting to the murder of a ‍24-year-old Pennsylvania woman who had relocated to Boston, ⁢Massachusetts. Irmer has since been⁤ extradited ⁤to Boston and arraigned in Boston Municipal Court Central Division, as ⁤announced⁤ by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in a press release on Monday.

A Chilling Account of the Crime

According to authorities, Irmer recounted⁤ the‌ chilling details of the crime. He claimed to have met⁣ a red-haired woman at ⁢a⁤ Boston skating rink around Halloween almost 44 years⁤ ago. They walked to ⁤an apartment building under renovation, where he swiftly grabbed a hammer and repeatedly struck the woman on the head. ⁤She died instantly, and Irmer confessed to raping her afterwards. The next day, he fled to New York, as stated in the press release.

Investigators were⁤ able to corroborate ⁣Irmer’s ‍account ‍when they discovered that a red-haired woman named Susan Marcia Rose was found ‌murdered at the same apartment building on October 30, 1979. Rose’s cause of death‍ was determined ⁢to be ⁢blunt force trauma‍ to‍ the head, resulting in a fractured skull and lacerated brain. A DNA sample collected⁢ at the crime scene, preserved for‍ 44 ⁤years, matched a sample taken from ⁢Irmer after his recent confession.

Rose, ‍originally from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, had moved to Boston before her tragic demise. ⁢In⁢ June‍ 1981, another‌ man was tried for her murder⁣ but was ultimately acquitted.

“Nearly ‍44 ⁣years‌ after ‌losing her at such a young age, the family ‌and friends of Susan Marcia Rose will finally⁢ have some answers,” expressed District ⁤Attorney Kevin Hayden. “This‌ was ⁣a‌ brutal, ice-blooded murder made worse by⁢ the fact that a person was ‌charged and tried — and fortunately, found not guilty — while the real murderer⁢ remained silent until now. No matter how cold⁤ cases get resolved, it’s always the answers that are⁣ important for‌ those who have lived with grief⁤ and loss and so many agonizing questions.”

Irmer was⁢ arraigned ‍for ⁤the crime on Monday and reportedly⁤ hid behind a wall for much ⁤of the proceedings,⁢ as ⁣reported⁣ by CBS Boston here. He ⁤is currently being held without bail on charges⁢ of murder⁤ and aggravated rape.

Furthermore, Irmer allegedly confessed to ⁣FBI agents that he was responsible for multiple murders, as reported by the Boston Globe here. ‍In court, Assistant District Attorney ⁣John Verner revealed that Irmer admitted‍ to another murder in the south, which is currently under investigation.
