Pennsylvania inmate escapes, still at large.
Escaped Inmate and Murder Suspect on the Run
A shocking incident unfolded in Pennsylvania last Thursday when Michael Burham, a 34-year-old inmate and prime suspect in a murder case, managed to escape from Warren County Prison. Utilizing exercise equipment cleverly, Burham reached a window and descended using a makeshift rope made from bedsheets, as reported by the Associated Press.
The search for Burham has now entered its seventh day, with authorities in Pennsylvania assuring the public that progress is being made. “I personally believe we are on the right track here,” stated Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police during a press conference on Wednesday, according to WGRZ. “We will follow any lead anywhere.”
Adding to the urgency, Bivens expressed concerns that Burham may be armed, citing recent information gathered by investigators. “We have additional information that we have gleaned recently that causes me to have additional concerns that he may be armed,” Bivens added, as reported by WIVB.
During the press conference, investigators revealed a potential lead. They suspect that a drone may have been flying over the prison on the night of Burham’s escape. Authorities are now searching for the operator and considering the possibility of an accomplice.
“I’m not a big believer in coincidences,” Bivens emphasized. “It could be that there was a perfectly innocent and reasonable explanation. It could also be that it was somehow connected to his escape. And we intend to find out more about that.”
Warren County Commissioner Jeff Eggleston informed reporters that prison staff were unaware of a broken fence in the rooftop prison yard, which allowed Burham to escape undetected. By the time guards discovered the breach, Burham had already vanished.
Addressing the concerns of residents, Warren County Board of Commissioners Vice Chair Benjamin Kafferlin assured them that accountability would be upheld. “I’m so sorry for the sleepless nights and the cloud of uncertainty that it has yet to give away to answer,” he added.
Earlier this week, Bivens revealed that authorities had located small stockpiles or campsites in wooded areas near Warren, which they believe may be associated with Burham. Known as a “survivalist,” Burham was being held on $1 million bail for charges including kidnapping, burglary, and other offenses. He is also the prime suspect in the murder of Kala Hodgkin on May 11, as well as a related arson. Additionally, he stands accused of abducting an elderly couple in Pennsylvania.
