Jordan Peterson: When someone is experiencing despair or depression, approaching the problem with a sense of humility can be a useful start to the process of transformation. Admitting that there is a problem and acknowledging the need for change is like making an offering to the problem. At this point, one might ask the question, “What am I doing wrong?” This is the willingness to sacrifice and offer oneself up for change. When someone searches their soul in this way, a revelation may come to them. This might happen in communication with others or as a subjective, phenomenological experience. A redemptive answer may make itself manifest. This approach is like knocking on a door, seeking an answer, and being open to receiving the response.
Ben Shapiro: Reading the five books of Moses every year has been a long-held tradition in my family, and though I found the sections on the tabernacle to be boring, I gained new insights on them after reading Dr. Jordan B. Peterson’s book, “Maps of Meaning.” He talks about how children apprehend the world, how objects have values attached to them. This understanding is reflected in the story of the Garden of Eden. The world and its objects come with a set of rules, values, and purposes. But when people start substituting their own sense of moral good or ethical good for the teleological, or purpose-based view, ejection from the Garden of Eden occurs. In the story of the tabernacle, the world is being re-instantiated with meaning and purpose, with God offering The Law as a way back into a world where meaning is embedded in the world and not separate from it.
