Aaron Rodgers, the renowned quarterback for the New York Jets, recently had the opportunity to cross off an item from his sports bucket list. Attending the U.S. Open for the first time since his move to the New York/New Jersey area, Rodgers made a statement that caught everyone’s attention.
In a now-expired Instagram story, Rodgers shared a picture of himself at the event, seated and captivated by the performance of No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic. Alongside the image, he wrote, “Bucket list” with a green check mark emoji, expressing his excitement at witnessing the greatness of Djokovic in person at #arthurashestadium.
Above the picture of Djokovic, who’s about to serve, Rodgers used a red line to cross out a Moderna logo on an ad on a side panel. He also posted a goat emoji with the hashtag: “novaxdjokovic.”
Djokovic, a 36-year-old tennis legend, achieved his record 47th Grand Slam semifinal after being unable to participate in the U.S. Open last year due to his unvaccinated status against COVID-19.
“Well, I’m a big fan of Novak and I got to see him in person,” Rodgers shared. “I took that photo and then realized that there was a little Moderna sign in the background. Novak is one of the most fit athletes in the world, and I think that anybody looking at the situation realizes how ridiculous it was to not allow him into the country with his level of fitness and the way he takes care of his body.
“Like him, I care about health, and I was just having a little bit of fun with it.”
Two years ago, Rodgers made headlines when he ambiguously stated, “Yeah, I’m immunized,” in response to questions about his vaccination status. He later admitted that he had misled some people and confirmed that he was not vaccinated. During the 2021 season, he tested positive for COVID-19 and missed a game.
Rodgers explained that he had pursued alternative treatments instead of the NFL-endorsed COVID-19 vaccinations due to his allergy to an ingredient in two of the FDA-approved shots.
As for Djokovic, he will be competing against Ben Shelton in one men’s semifinal, while Carlos Alcaraz, the No. 1 seed, will face off against third-seeded Daniil Medvedev in the other. The winners of these matches will battle it out in the final on Sunday.
Rodgers and the Jets will kick off their season on Monday night at home against the Buffalo Bills.
