Abortion rates surge in states with restrictions post Roe v. Wade reversal.
Study Shows Spike in Abortions Following Overturn of Roe v. Wade
According to a new study, the overturn of Roe v. Wade has led to a significant increase in abortions in states neighboring or near those with restrictions. The Guttmacher Institute estimates that from January to June 2023, the monthly number of abortions remained in the mid-80,000 range, except for a spike in March to around 91,800.
Impact of Biden Administration and Deregulation
The increase in abortions predates the June 2022 Dobbs decision and has been heavily influenced by the Biden administration’s aggressive push to deregulate and promote mail-order abortion pills. Tessa Longbons, Senior Research Associate at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, explains, “What we’re seeing in this dataset isn’t a new trend.”
Abortion Restrictions and Zero Abortions
In 2023, 14 states completely restricted abortions, with 13 of them implementing modern legislation. Wisconsin even saw an 1849 restriction take effect after the fall of Roe. As a result, virtually zero abortions were performed in these states. In 2020, these states accounted for about 113,000 abortions, or 12% of all abortions in the United States that year.
Increasing Number of Abortions Prior to Supreme Court Decision
The number of abortions in the United States was already on the rise before the 2022 Supreme Court decision, with an 8% increase from 2017 to 2020. Guttmacher Institute suggests that the increase may have continued into 2022.
Abortion Tourism and Incomplete Reporting
While some states, like Texas, experienced significant decreases in abortion due to near-total restrictions, neighboring states with more permissive laws became abortion tourism zones, leading to a substantial increase in their abortion numbers. However, state reporting of abortion is incomplete, making it difficult to obtain accurate data.
Impact on Marginalized Communities
Research has shown that abortion bans and restrictions disproportionately affect marginalized communities, including those with low incomes, black and brown communities, people of color, young people, LGBTQ people, and those in rural areas.
Call for Comprehensive Reporting Data
Due to the lack of federal reporting standards and chaotic statewide reporting systems, it is challenging to determine the true number of abortions. Tessa Longbons encourages the pro-abortion side to join in advocating for complete reporting data from states to obtain comprehensive and objective information on abortion.

Changing Abortion Landscape
The abortion landscape in the United States is still evolving, with some states facing legal challenges to their attempted restrictions, while others, like Wisconsin, are working to undo historical restrictions. Janet Protasiewicz, an openly pro-abortion state supreme court justice, was recently elected in Wisconsin.
