Adam Schiff Claims “Sufficient Evidence” to Charge Trump Ahead of Jan 6 Committee Meeting

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), a member of the Jan. 6 committee, said he believes there is “sufficient evidence” to charge former President Donald Trump for crimes in connection to last year’s riot at the Capitol.

“I think that the evidence is there that Donald Trump committed criminal offenses,” he said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. “And viewing it as a former prosecutor, I think there’s sufficient evidence to charge the president.”

The committee will vote on whether to issue at least three criminal referrals to the Justice Department when it meets for its final public meeting on Monday, according to Politico. The charges under consideration are insurrection, obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government.

“This is someone who, in multiple ways, tried to pressure state officials to find votes that didn’t exist. This is someone who tried to interfere with a joint session, even inciting a mob to attack the Capitol,” Schiff said. “If that’s not criminal, then I don’t know what is.”

When asked if he thought the evidence against Trump was enough for a conviction, Schiff could not say.

“I don’t know what the Justice Department has,” he said. “I do know what’s in the public record. The evidence seems pretty plain to me. But I would want to see the full body of evidence, if I were in the prosecutor’s shoes, to make a decision.”

Schiff’s comments echo those of Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), another Jan. 6 committee member, who said this week that he thinks Trump is “guilty of a crime.”
