Adams cautions Biden: Inaction on NYC immigrants will devastate city.
Mayor Eric Adams Warns of Impending Crisis in New York City
In a passionate plea to President Joe Biden, Mayor Eric Adams has issued a stark warning about the migrant crisis in New York City. He emphasized that the city, often referred to as the ”economic engine” of the United States, is on the brink of devastation if federal action is not taken immediately.
Adams urged federal officials to provide much-needed financial assistance and resources to support housing and food for asylum-seekers. Since the spring of 2022, nearly 100,000 immigrants have arrived in New York City, and Adams predicts that the cost of this crisis could reach a staggering $12 billion by 2025 if the influx of immigrants continues.
A City at Risk
“New York City is the economic engine of this entire state and country,” Adams passionately expressed during an interview with CBS Mornings. “If you decimate this city, you’re going to decimate the foundation of what’s happening… What you saw at Roosevelt a few days ago is because the dam finally burst.”
Adams’ statement follows the widely circulated images of immigrants sleeping on the streets outside the Roosevelt Hotel. Due to a housing shortage and lack of beds for asylum-seekers, the hotel has been converted into a migrant shelter and intake center.
New York City has also become a target for conservative governors of U.S. states along the southern border with Mexico. Over half of the recent arrivals are relying on the city, seeking refuge in approximately 200 emergency shelters, mega-relief centers, and smaller, short-term respite facilities.
Pressuring the National Government
Adams stressed the need to hold the “national government” accountable for addressing immigration issues and implementing genuine reform.
“The pressure needs to be on our national government. If we look at one side of the aisle, and not the other side of the aisle, the national government needs to make sure we have true immigration reform and handle the crisis we are dealing with right now,” Adams asserted.
While Adams acknowledged that the blame cannot be solely placed on the current administration, he criticized Republicans for obstructing real immigration reform. He also highlighted the use of FEMA funds on the southern border, which he believes diverts resources from New York City.

A Call for Urgent Action
Mayor Adams’ warning comes on the heels of his plea to President Biden to declare the migrant crisis in the city a “state of emergency.” Such a declaration would expedite federal funding. Currently, the Biden administration has allocated $140 million, and the state has allocated $1 billion in its budget to assist the city with the crisis.
Adams is scheduled to meet with Tom Perez, the director of intergovernmental affairs at the White House, later today, as reported by the New York Post.
