Afghan Interpreter Turned Lyft Driver Murdered in Washington, D.C.
Nasrat Ahmad Yar, a Lyft driver who previously worked as an interpreter in Afghanistan, has tragically become the latest victim of violence in Washington, D.C. Yar dedicated a decade of his life to assisting U.S. forces in his war-torn homeland. Following the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, he made the difficult decision to flee with his family and start a new life in the United States. To support his wife and four children, Yar took up driving for Lyft. However, his life was cut short on Monday night while on duty. Responding to a call in Capitol Hill, police discovered Yar near his car, fatally wounded by a gunshot. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
As of now, the police have not made any arrests in connection with the murder. To encourage potential witnesses to come forward, a reward of $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Security footage from the scene shows four individuals fleeing, with one person captured on camera saying, “You just killed him.”
“He was reaching, bruh,” another person responds in the footage.
Yar’s tragic death is part of a disturbing trend in Washington, D.C., where 10 people have been killed in the first five days of this month alone. Among the victims were a social studies teacher attending a development conference and a college student enjoying their summer break in the nation’s capital.
Escalating Crime Rates in Washington, D.C.
Shootings and homicides have been on the rise in Washington, D.C. In 2019, there were 135 fatal shootings and 557 non-fatal shootings. These numbers increased in 2022 to 174 fatal shootings and 710 non-fatal shootings.
Even more concerning is the fact that criminal charges are rarely brought against those arrested. Shockingly, two-thirds of individuals apprehended in Washington, D.C. never face criminal charges, according to data from the U.S. attorney’s office.
Yar’s tragic murder is yet another example of the escalating crime rates in cities governed by Democratic politicians. Residents of Portland, for instance, are leaving the city due to its rampant crime. Similarly, other major Democratic cities like San Francisco and New York City have also experienced an exodus of residents, with San Francisco losing 7.5 percent of its population and New York City losing over 5 percent between 2020 and 2022.
