Afghanistan Gold Star Mom sought solace from Biden, but he proposed a photo together instead.
A Heartbreaking Encounter with President Joe Biden
In a deeply emotional meeting, a Gold Star mother who lost her son in the Kabul airport terrorist attack shared her heartbreaking experience with President Joe Biden on Memorial Day. Paula Knauss Selph, the executive director of the Respect and Remember Foundation, met Biden in the Oval Office during an event for Gold Star families in Washington, D.C. in 2022.
A Mother’s Grief
Paula Knauss Selph, whose son Army Staff Sgt. Ryan Christian Knauss was among the 13 American soldiers killed in the Kabul attack, expressed the immense grief she has endured. She shared, “There’s nothing like watching your child die in front of you, in front of the world.”
During their meeting, Selph tearfully confronted Biden, telling him, “It should have never happened this way.” She described the President’s stoic response, saying, “He stood there stoically… Nothing out of his mouth except — well, would you like to get a photo with me?”
A Disappointing Response
Selph, determined to honor her son’s memory, made a powerful request to Biden. She insisted that the only photo she would take with him was at her son’s tombstone in Arlington National Cemetery. However, Biden claimed that the Secret Service would not allow him to fulfill her request.
Selph expressed her disappointment, calling it a “moral disgrace” for a president to prioritize a “photo op” over comforting a grieving mother. She firmly held Biden accountable for the decisions and indecisions that ultimately cost her son his life.
A Son’s Legacy
Reflecting on her son’s life, Selph spoke proudly of his unwavering dedication to serving in the armed forces. She described him as disciplined, intelligent, and committed to protecting and preserving the American dream for others. Selph believes that her son’s legacy will continue to inspire and impact lives long after his passing.
The Mission of the Respect and Remember Foundation
The Respect and Remember Foundation, led by Paula Knauss Selph, has three primary goals:
- To provide merit scholarships for JROTC and ROTC Cadets as they transition into the military
- To support active duty military personnel stationed abroad through care packages and welcome home baskets
- To partner with veteran-led organizations, fostering connections among veterans to combat the high suicide rate and assist with the transition to civilian life
Through these initiatives, the foundation aims to honor the sacrifices made by military personnel and create a positive impact on their lives.
