African Immigrant Who Murdered 65-Year-Old Jewish Woman In Paris While Screaming ‘Allahu Akbar’ Won’t Face Prison Because He Was High
The highest court in France has reportedly ruled that Kobili Traoré — who admitted to beating and murdering a 65-year-old Jewish woman — cannot stand trial because he was high on marijuana at the time of the attack.
“The highest court in France has ruled that the man who killed a Jewish woman in 2017 in an anti-Semitic frenzy cannot stand trial because he was in a state of acute mental delirium brought on by his consumption of cannabis,” reported The New York Times.
Traoré — an African immigrant from Mali who is currently in a psychiatric institution — “beat Sarah Halimi, 65, before throwing her out the window of her Paris apartment to cries of ‘Allahu akbar,’ … and ‘I killed the devil.’”
According to the Times, “Mr. Traoré, who was 27 at the time, had been troubled by Ms. Halimi’s mezuza, which ‘amplified the frantic outburst of hate,’ according to one psychiatric report.”
In response to the court’s decision, four years after Halimi’s murder, French President Emanuel Macron “expressed support on Sunday for the country’s Jewish community and its efforts to bring the killer of Sarah Halimi to trial,” according to The Times Of Israel, adding that he would seek a legislative change to prevent such a case from happening in the future.
“It’s not for me to comment on a court decision, but I would like to express to the family, to the relatives of the victim, and to all our Jewish citizens who were waiting for a trial, my warm support and the Republic’s determination to protect them,” Macron told Le Figaro.
Macron said that France “does not judge citizens who are sick, we treat them… But deciding to take drugs and then ‘going crazy’ should not, in my opinion, take away your criminal responsibility.”
He added: “I would like Justice Minister [Eric Dupond-Moretti] to present a change in the law as soon as possible.”
The lawyer for Halimi’s brother, Muriel Ouaknine Melki, said that the ruling was “a bad message for French Jewish citizens.”
According to The Jerusalem Post, Yonthan Arfi, vice president of CRIF (Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions), condemned the ruling and decried this case as indicative of a loophole in the battle against hate crimes. In addition to other related work, the organization is looking to change the law so that individuals remain criminally responsible for their actions, even if they have taken drugs.
“We are starting to build a consensus on this idea,” he said. “Many people in France consider it natural that if you drink wine and get in a car crash you are responsible for losing control of your car.”
“This crime was symbolic of the new antisemitism,” he added. “The perpetrator was a Muslim. He was praying to Allah while murdering her. He was radicalized with a radical Islamist vision, and he knew she was Jewish, so we cannot accept that the antisemitic part of this crime will be erased from the collective memory of Sarah Halimi in French society.”
According to an unpublished two-year report on anti-Semitism in 11 European countries, the threat to France’s 450,000 Jews (the world’s third-largest Jewish community after Israel and the United States) is the most “acute.”
“Attacks and threats against French Jews surged 74 percent from 2017 to 2018, and preliminary data for the first half of 2019 indicate ‘further intensification,’ with another 75 percent increase last year,” reported the New York Post.
