This surge in searches followed Disney’s decision to increase the monthly subscription price of Disney+ by 27 percent. Subscribers will now have to pay $13.99 for the basic package, up from the previous price of $10.99.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first time Disney has raised its prices. According to Breitbart, the price was already increased last year. Subscribers were initially paying $7.99 a month before the series of price hikes began.
Declining Subscribers and Controversy
The price increase comes as Disney continues to lose subscribers. Breitbart reports that the streaming service lost 300,000 subscribers in Canada and the United States in the last quarter alone. Additionally, none of Disney’s original Marvel or “Star Wars” shows made it to the top 15 most viewed streaming programs of 2022, as reported by Breitbart.
Investopedia suggests that Disney’s decision to raise prices may be a response to its declining subscriber numbers. The service has lost a staggering 18 million subscribers since its peak in 2022, raising concerns about its future profitability compared to competitors like Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Despite the backlash and controversy, Disney CEO Bob Iger aims to make the service profitable again by 2024. However, the media giant continues to face criticism from conservatives who accuse it of promoting a “woke agenda” in its content.
While the price hike may have upset some subscribers, Disney+ remains cheaper than its competitors. According to Investopedia, even with the increase, Disney+ is still more affordable than services like Netflix and Amazon Prime.
The new pricing will take effect in October, giving subscribers time to decide whether they will continue their Disney+ subscription or join the growing number of people searching for ways to cancel.
