A daring adventure turned deadly for Tom Gerbier, a pilot from France, who went missing while hiking the majestic Mount Whitney in California. The National Park Service announced on Friday that Gerbier’s lifeless body was discovered at the bottom of a cliff, having fallen approximately 1,000 feet (305 meters).
Gerbier, 38 years old and employed by Air France, embarked on his journey from Whitney Portal near Lone Pine on Tuesday. Concerns arose when he failed to return for his scheduled flight on Wednesday, prompting a search operation led by the park service and local authorities.
After spotting signs of a potential fall in an area known as “The Notch,” search teams directed a helicopter to investigate. Tragically, they found a motionless figure dressed in clothing matching Gerbier’s description. The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed his identity.
Mount Whitney, standing tall at 14,494 feet (4,418 meters), is a challenging yet popular hiking destination located in Sequoia National Park. Gerbier’s untimely demise serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with this breathtaking adventure.
According to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, Gerbier’s body was airlifted from the treacherous terrain later that evening. Air France expressed their deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
