The Rev. Al Sharpton Criticizes Supreme Court’s Decision on Affirmative Action
The Supreme Court’s affirmative action ruling as a betrayal.”>recent decision striking down affirmative action has drawn strong criticism from the Rev. Al Sharpton. In a passionate statement, he likened the ruling to a stab in the back, emphasizing the significance of considering race in the admissions process.
Affirmative Action and its Importance
Under affirmative action, universities were allowed to take into account the race of applicants as one of the factors in their admissions process. However, it was crucial that race did not become the sole determining factor. Sharpton argued that this policy was necessary due to the country’s racial history.
“I think that this is tantamount to sticking a dagger in our back because what they have said now is that it is unconstitutional to even consider race,” Sharpton expressed. “It was against the law for us to read and write until 160 years ago. We were enslaved for 246 years.”
The Supreme Court’s decision effectively overturned the landmark 1978 case Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, which had upheld affirmative action. Sharpton placed part of the blame on former President Donald Trump, who appointed three justices to the court.
“My last point, my last point that really is frightening to me is now in the private sector, corporations, many of whom made pledges around the George Floyd movement, that didn’t live up to them, can now say: ‘Well, we can’t consider race in terms of contracts and employment and board members and what we do in the community because the court now is saying it is unconstitutional,'” Sharpton expressed. “The laws were against us, and now the law has turned on us.”
A Pew Research poll reveals that a majority of Americans, including 84% of whites, 81% of Hispanics, 76% of Asians, and 71% of blacks, believe that race should not be a factor in college admissions.
