Alabama Governor signs legislation prohibiting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs at public universities
Alabama Governor Takes a Stand Against DEI Programs
Republican Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed a law this week that bans state funding of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at state agencies and public universities and requires those institutions to have sex-specific bathrooms.
The Move Sparks Controversy
Ivey signed the measure, known as SB129, after it sailed through both the state House and Senate. The decision comes amidst a nationwide debate on the focus of DEI programs on identity rather than merit.
“My Administration values Alabama’s diversity, but I cannot allow a misuse of DEI to push a political agenda against the beliefs of most Alabamians,” Governor Ivey stated.
The law will restrict public entities from supporting DEI programs and ban the promotion of certain divisive concepts in public forums, while ensuring separate facilities for males and females in public institutions.
Among the banned concepts is the notion that individuals are inherently racist based on skin color, a controversial topic in education where some argue all white individuals are deemed oppressors.

Divided Opinions
Opponents, mainly Democrats and liberal groups, fear the law may stifle discussions on sensitive historical topics, while supporters maintain it won’t hinder the teaching of accurate history, even concerning Alabama’s darker past.
Similar legislation has been enacted in states like Florida and Texas, and Republican lawmakers in Congress are advocating to cut federal funding to medical schools integrating DEI practices into their curriculum.
