Hoda Mukthana, a 28 year-old woman, is being held by U.S. allied Kurdish forces at a Syrian detention center. During an Interview Muthana, a camp worker, said that she was brainwashed by traffickers in 2014 over the internet and convinced her to join. She stated that she regrets everything except for her son, who she had with an Islamic State fighter.
“I’ve always said if I need to sit in prison, and do my time, I will do it. I as well am a victim of ISIS,” She spoke to The News Movement.

Muthana’s parents Immigrated Her parents are from Yemen. She was raised in Alabama and born in New Jersey. When she was twenty-five years old, she left her home to join ISIS. She was raised in a conservative Muslim family and told her family she was going to go on a trip with her school. But instead, she went to Turkey and ended up in Syria.
“[Her parents] didn’t know I was leaving, but they had an idea,” Hoda previously Buzzfeed News interviewed her in 2015 to discuss ISIS. “They’d see news reports about girls who have made it [to Syria] and say things like, ‘Hoda would probably do that.’’’
“I believe she’s been brainwashed,” When she was first questioned about her, her father replied that she was her mother. “She’s not that kind of girl. They brainwashed her.”
She also revealed to her father how she had lied about wanting money to escape in the 2015 interview. She claimed that she wanted to escape from being forced into marriage. He told her he warned her she could be pushed to marry when she arrived in Syria.
In her recent interview, she stated that she was held in a locked house for unmarried mothers and children when she arrived in Syria.
“We slept in very unsanitary places. I’ve never seen that kind of filthiness in my life, like there was 100 women and twice as much kids, running around, too much noise, filthy beds,” She said it in the interview.
“It’s like a system that makes you almost go crazy to force yourself to get married because that’s the only way out,” She made the observation.
One way to escape was to marry an ISIS fighter. She did this and had her first child. She reportedly claimed that she divorced the third man after she lost two of her husbands to combat injuries.
She ran from Syria’s Enclaves in early 2019 and ended up in another prison camp.
