Alan Dershowitz Says Manhattan DA’s Case Against Trump Is ‘Weak’

Alan Dershowitz, a well-known legal scholar, stated on April 5 that the Manhattan district attorney’s case against ex-President Donald Trump is “weak.”

Dershowitz told The Epoch Times that “there’s nothing strong about it. You can’t create strength with multiple weaknesses”. This was after Trump pleaded not guilty to the 34 felony charges of falsifying business records at a Manhattan court.

These 34 charges are a part of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation into the $130,000 hush money payment by Trump’s then- lawyer, Michael Cohen, to adult entertainment actress Stormy Daniels in the weeks leading up to the 2016 presidential election. Daniels alleges that she had an affair with Trump in 2006, an allegation which the former president has denied.

The New York prosecutors asserted that Trump directed Cohen to pay the hush money to Daniels and then reimbursed him for it illegally under the guise of a monthly legal service retainer, which led to 34 false entries into New York’s business records. Bragg claimed that these entries were covering violations of state, federal election laws and state tax laws. Trump denies any wrongdoing in the matter.

Dershowitz finds these charges untenable, stating that “there are 34 bad counts, and 34 bad counts do not make a single good count,” and that the indictment is based on a “deep fallacy.” He feels that prosecutors were working off a flawed assumption that required Trump to disclose on publicly available forms the fact that he paid to keep the matter secret, which was the crucial issue.
